What is the meaning of IP68 and IP67?

Samsung Galaxy S8 IP68 Water Test
IP67 or IP68 consists of three codes, namely IP, and followed code number 6 and ending code number 7 or 8.

IP is short for International Protection aka international protection.

These certification standards are developed and prepared by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Further number 6 is used as a marker that the smartphone is resistant to dust, sand or other similar particulars.

Lastly there is a code number 7 or 8.
Number 7 is used as an indicator that the smartphone is resistant to water attack and able to dive at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes.

While the number 8 is used as an indicator that the smartphone is resistant to water attack and can dive at a depth of 1.5 - 2 meters for 30 minutes.

So the difference between IP67 and IP68 lies only at the depth of water.

In theory, when smartphones are certified IP68 and IP67 submerged at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes, the smartphone will survive and there will be no permanent damage.

Or even for careless things like dropping a smartphone into a toilet, bathtub, or sink, smartphones with IP68 and IP67 will be safe.

Can I use it in the water?

Actually this issue is still a bit ambiguous.
However, as quoted by Trusted Reviews, smartphones with IP67 and IP68 not necessarily able to survive when invited to dive.

Because we do not know for sure the pressure of water and the distance of water depth when engrossed in diving.

In addition, IP verification tests are performed when the smartphone is in standby mode alias is not operated at all.

"Remember not to use smartphones under water. Your smartphone's IP rating is achieved when the smartphone is in standby mode, so you are not recommended operating a smartphone underwater, such as taking pictures, " the International Electrotechnical Commission said.
In addition, the pool or the sea contains a lot of substances that can attack the smartphone system such as urine, saliva, until the salt.

So, maybe for an occasional or two times a smartphone will survive, but for the next experiment, it could be a smartphone will have problems. If you want to take photos in the water, it would be better to use a cam action with a waterproof casing.
